Backup and Archive in Banking is mandated and heavily regulated. When key components of the infrastructure reaches end of life, migration to a new platform is inevitable. In this case the migration involves moving from the existing Oracle solution with eight Oracle SL8500 10,000 slot libraries to a new tapeless solution. In such a migration, the application must be systematically migrated to the new platform for backup/archive of new data while maintaining access to the end of life platform for recall of legacy data. To complete the migration, all the legacy data must be migrated to the new platform.
During any migration, both the old and the new platforms run simultaneously which adds to the overall cost of the migration – the longer the transition period, the more costly the migration. In this case, the migration was estimated to take 3 – 5 years. The customer’s challenge was to minimize costs during the migration without sacrificing operational capabilities. Simply put, they needed to keep the legacy environment operating at its peak to ensure a smooth and timely completion of the migration with no loss of data or service interruption and reduce costs. The customer turned to Keltech to service and support their legacy Oracle tape environment and achieve cost savings.
